He studied economic history, history of science and economics at the University of Oxford, where he received his D.Phil. His research focuses on the long-run dynamics of innovation and entrepreneurship, human capital, institutions and economic performance, and living standards. A distinctive feature of his work is the systematic use of historical datasets and quantitative methods to investigate economic development over the long run.
